A learned or even over-accomplished woman is one of the most intolerable monsters in creation

Over the last century or so, women have gradually freed themselves from oppression and gained equal – or almost equal rights for themselves in society. BAH. They have proven themselves to be as good, if not better, than men in many areas, and have contributed greatly to the development of the world’s economy. Some people – mostly men- are opposed to this trend, and feel that “a learned or even over-accomplished woman is one of the most intolerable monsters in creation.” It might be though, in my opinion, that this is one of the most bigoted statements I have heard, and it is highly unfair, to label successful women as monsters.

Even in this modern age, many people still hold fast to asian beliefs, one of which is the preference of males over females. In India, a great number of female infants are killed each year because boys are wanted and not girls. Also, it is still the case in many countries, especially developing countries, that boys are sent to school while girls receive little or no education. There is an old Chinese saying that: “it is a virtue for women to be uneducated.” These people feel that women’s place is in a home, and a role of a womanin life is to be a good homemaker and mother. In their eyes, it is almost unacceptable for a woman to be doing a man’s job and to erceive higher education.

Many women are now working in jobs which traditionally are held by men, such as managerial positions, police officers and doctors. Many men do not like the increased competition, as there is a lower chance of them being employed at these positions. However, whether willingly or not, the fact that they feel threatened by this shows that they recognize the ability of females in the workplace. Also, they feel that as men, they have an obligation to provide for their families, while women do not usually have to. Thus, they view women as enemies in a fight for positions.

Many men still do not want to marry women who have had a higher level of education or are holding higher paying jobs. This may be chauvinistic to some, but all men have their pride and dignity. Many of them cannot bear to feel inferior to their wives because they feel that they should wield the power in their marriage. But above all, they need to feel wanted, to feel that they are contributing to the family.

Female bosses are also not highly regarded among males, who view them as being “cold and heartless” very often. However, this may be due to the fact that women very often have a very responsible attitude towards work and do not let emotions and relationships affect their work. It is what they do, because every success is a statement for the ability of women, further prove of their worth to society.

Many men may feel resentment towards women because even though they are as capable as men and have equal rights in so many ways, they are still favoured by law. For example, in many societies, the husband has to pay alimony to his wife after divorce. And in some crimes, the punishment for females is not as severe as that for males.

That many of these males feel resentment is not wrong in itself, for they have a right to feel anything they want. It is the idea they have of females that is wrong. Even though proof is placed before their eyes, they will still prefer not to believe the fact women are as capable as men. Perhaps in their subconscious, yes, but rarely openly. Even if they do acknowledge that fact, many still resent female superiors because their pride makes them feel unhappy that they have to work under a female. They do not see the fact that women have contributed greatly to the development of the economy and society as a whole. Women form a large proportion of the teachers in the world and have helped to nurture young people for many years. Female scientists such as Marie Curie, have done a great deal for science and medicine. A large proportion of the labour workforce in factories and businesses, which are one the pillars in a country’s economy, are women.

It is therefore easy to see that the statement is an extremely unfair and bias one, probably due to the lack of responsiveness or to excessive pride and resentment. If a woman is successful, it is due to her own hard work and determination, so it is very unfair to label her as a monster.
