Differences are something you live with, not fight about

By Melson Chun

No fingerprints of any two man are ever the same, this also applies to personality and character. It is impossible to find two people with the exact character traits because of the different environment, family background they grow up in and the friends they mix with. Since everybody is different, it is important to be able to live other people’s differences and not fight about them.
There are many cases of racial and religious conflicts around the world, most of which have resulted in bloodshed and unnecessary loss of lives and property. This is because some people of a particular race or religion are unable to accept people of other races and religion, which they deem as a deviation to their own beliefs. Not too long ago in Indonesia, the Muslim community targeted against Indonesian born Chinese, which resulted in a number of innocent lives lost. Singapore however, is one such country that is able to cope extremely well with this issue. We are a multi-religious society and have always lived in harmony. The rich mix of Indian, Western, Eastern and Muslim culture is possible because Singaporeans know how to integrate into and accept the various racial and religious differences.
At the international level, countries also have to accept the different ways various governments of other countries work. In the twenty-first century, many economies are now more open than before and most governments are now capitalists. This peaceful world situation is caused by the willingness of various countries to accept the differences, which has even led to a more globalised world economy. The differences, if any are settled by conferences and diplomacy rather than with violence. This was unlikely to happen in the past especially during the Cold War era. The world was divided into Capitalist and Socialist blocs led by the United States and the Soviet Union respectively due to ideological differences. There was constant enmity between these two countries and the division within the blocs themselves further exacerbated their alliances. Thus we can see that only by accepting the differences of the various political systems can we be assured of world peace.
Differences are what we have to cope with even in our everyday lives. A married couple will have to face each other everyday of their lives. Only by learning to accept the good and the bad habits of your spouse can you ensure a long lasting marriage. The same applies to the way we treat friends and family. If there is discrimination of a certain person just because he or she does not like the same food or the same films, then friends would not even exist in the first place because no two persons are the same.
However, there are some differences that are worth fighting over. As the world grows increasingly affluent, the gap between the rich and the poor also widens. This is especially so in developing countries like Burma and certain parts of India. This income gap has to be narrowed. If this situation worsens, there will always be people who have to starve and people who are filthy rich. This is not in line with the world vision – equality for all mankind.
Of course, the most obvious difference worth fighting over is the controversial issue of Man versus Woman. For centuries, women activists have been fighting for the rights of women. Although women’s rights have increasingly been returned to them, this is mostly seen only in developed countries. In most developing nations however, many women are still subordinated to men and abuse cases are common. This difference certainly cannot be tolerated. Women must learn to fight for their rights or risk further subjugation.
In most cases, differences must be looked over and accepted in order to achieve peace and harmony, whether they are personal or political differences. On the other hand, there are certain differences, which must be fought for and not lived with, especially if it is morally right and benefits most people. Further tolerance will only worsen the situation as in the case of women’s rights.
